What are PET preforms and what are they for?

PET preforms are an intermediate product in the production chain. At Maxipet we use it to manufacture bottles using the blow-injection technique. In this process, the polymer is injected into an initial preform, then the preform is placed in a blow molding station to be inflated, cooled, and finally ejected. Preforms are used for the high-volume production of bottles and containers used for packaging. Learn everything you need to know about PET preforms here.

All about PET

Polyethylene terephthalate, better known as PET, is a highly versatile polymer. It is a very resistant material and easy to recycle, therefore, it is very friendly to the environment. PET is the most widely used material to manufacture plastic containers since it provides a barrier against oxygen and humidity, which makes it the perfect resin for the manufacture of food and pharmaceutical containers. Thanks to its lightness it is one of the main choices for the packaging industry and lastly, it is very economical compared to other materials.

One of the most notable features of PET is that it is a 100% recyclable material and can be used to manufacture clothing, backpacks, shoes, or other functional or decorative items. In addition, it requires less energy and water to manufacture and recycle, and this material has been shown to have the lowest carbon footprint compared to other materials. Finally, thanks to its low weight it allows a better distribution of the product, which reduces CO2 emissions and the use of gasoline during transport.

What are PET preforms?

PET preforms are the "primary" way to manufacture a plastic container, which goes through a softening process to introduce it into a mold that has the final shape of the product, and then pressurized air is introduced. The size of its thread, its weight, and its color are characteristics that the bottles made with this technique will have. One of the main advantages of PET preforms is that they offer the possibility of adapting to the needs of different market sectors.

To make them, the pelletized resin must first be heated to a smooth mixture that is injected into a mold and placed in a cooling system to harden them. Its weight can vary from 10 grams to 750 grams, this factor will depend on the type of container to be manufactured. Therefore, the larger and heavier, more material is required.

A large part of the manufacturers of plastic containers usually acquires preforms, since it is a complex procedure that requires attention to detail during its manufacture. For example, it is very important to pay attention to the temperature of the resin when it is injected into the mold, the speed in the blow molding station, and the cooling process.
